PROCALCITONIN

Procalcitonin test, also known as PCT test, is used to diagnose sepsis and severe bacterial infections at an early stage. 

Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's response to an infection damages its own tissues. Sepsis can cause organ failure and even death, if not treated on time. 

The Procalcitonin test has primarily been used in people who seek care at emergency departments or who are admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) with signs and symptoms that may be due to sepsis.
