Factor V Leiden forms due to an inherited defect in the gene called F5 that increases your risk of developing clots in the blood vessels & lungs. This gene defect is inherited in a dominant manner which means that only one of the parent can pass the defective gene to their child. You are at greater risk of developing clots if you suffer from other clotting disorders or you take estrogen containing medicines.
