Myoglobin is a protein present in heart muscle & skeletal muscles. It captures oxygen that muscle cells use to get energy. Whenever you suffer from muscle damage, myoglobin is released in the blood after 2 to 3 hours of injury. Muscle damage can be due to infections, poisons, trauma, surgery, excessive exercise, shock etc. Myoglobin is normally filtered by the kidneys but when there is excess myoglobin in the blood, the load on the kidney increases and you can suffer from kidney damage. Symptoms include muscle pain, chest pain, dark coloured urine, fever, weakness, nausea & vomiting.
