Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common virus which an individual carries for life if infected. CMV rarely causes problems in normal healthy people but it is a cause for concern in pregnant women & in people with weak immune system as seen in patients who have had organ transplant or have HIV. Infected pregnant women can pass the virus to their babies who suffer from birth defects (Congenital CMV). CMV spreads from person to person through blood, saliva, urine, semen & breast milk. This assay gives the total viral load in the body.
