Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV 2) commonly causes genital sores but can also cause fever blisters around the lips. Symptoms of genital herpes are pain, itching & sores on the genitalia along with blisters. These blisters rupture to form ulcers that heal by formation of scabs. It also causes painful urination and discharge from vagina & urethra. Sores can develop on buttocks, thighs, vagina, vulva, penis, anus & mouth. Infection spreads from person to person by close contact such as kissing & sexual intercourse. It can also spread from mother to baby during delivery. This test measures IgG antibodies against the virus which arise 10 to 21 days after the infection and persist indefinitely.
