Manganese is a trace element that helps various enzyme systems in the body to function. It is a normal constituent of air, soil, water & food. People working in mining industry for the production of iron & steel can be exposed to high levels of manganese leading to toxicity. You can also be exposed to high levels of manganese if you eat foods rich in manganese such as grains, beans & nuts. People who drink excessive tea or smoke tobacco can also also have higher manganese levels. Symptoms include weakness, lethargy, lack of appetite, headaches & psychological disturbances. In later stage of toxicity, patients have symptoms resembling Parkinson's disease. This test is used to assess manganese levels in the blood & monitor treatment.
