Osteocalcin is a hormone secreted by bone forming cells called osteoblasts. It is a marker of bone turnover in your body. The levels are increased whenever there is increased bone formation as seen in osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, hyperparathyroidism, acromegaly & after fractures. It helps to monitor & assess the effect of treatment in these patients. Osteocalcin also plays a role in regulating glucose metabolism in the pancreas, testosterone synthesis in the testes & it affects muscle mass.
