HDL (HDL-C) is a good cholesterol that picks up excess cholesterol in the body and takes it to the liver to be metabolised. High levels of HDL-C are associated with lower risk of heart disease. Lifestyle changes that increase HDL-C are exercise, diet changes, quitting smoking & drinking alcohol. Diet changes include reduction of trans fats like reducing consumption of cakes, cookies, fried food, margarine & full fat dairy products. However if you use medications to increase the level of HDL-C, the risk of heart disease does not reduce. HDL-C levels are low in individuals who are obese, have high blood pressure & diabetes.
